Israel is but a "regional superpower", said yesterday Ami Ayalon, a former head of
"shabak", on Israeli radio. True. As such, Israel has almost
run out of targets. It can shell Hizbollah real estate and
installations as fiercely as it would, only Hizbollah does not care about
love, life and the pursuit of happiness. They don't care if they are
thick or thin, they can always rise from a brink of disaster and get
fat again, because their support base is with Syria and Iran. And
against those, Israel cannot stand alone.
Already the usual UN meddlers are arriving in Israel, and Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister - a tough enough lady, but possessing of a heart - initially stating she will
not meet with them, finally agreed to talks. Why? Because they MAY
have some knowledge concerning the kidnapped Israeli soldiers. They may and
they may not. But in seeing the pale Terje Larsen, the usual UN meddler, Israeli leaders
could very well be at the beginning of the end of resolve. It will become
clear that Israel is alone, and Israel will compromise.
And so, despite overwhelming, almost total, resolve and approval for
this war within Israel, a whole population wanting to see this to the
end despite significant losses in life and displacement for a third of
the population (!) one starts to feel that this is turning
out to be just another skirmish, and the day of reckoning will be again, again,
delayed.
The US and the "west" are temporarily allowing Israel to leash out some power and
weaken its regional immediate terrorist enemy. But they will not go out
of their way to do something NOW about Syria and Iran. They
still hope they won't have to go to war over this themselves.
This said, there can happen some incredible outrage, any minute, that
will ignite the war for real. For this to happen, Israel, the canary scout, has to be
attacked in some significant strategic place, by an Iranian missile, and suffer even
more significantly... Something like this almost happened yesterday,
but the Iranian missile was intercepted and shot down upon launch, over
Beirut...
One wonders where God/fate/circumstance will take it from here. Traditionally, Evil is so
persistent in its Evil, that it finally leaves no choice to those on
the side of Good but to fight, usually only after delays upon delays...
I am afraid this war is proving to be just another skirmish, buying for Israel another limited installment of relative peace and prosperity. The world will soon sigh in relief. Another chapter in the modern day book of Judges...
To take on the Evil of Terrorism a stronger leadership is needed. A modern day "King".
